As previously planned, every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday I will be at Jose Monfort National Science High School. On this day, I had an observation in the junior high school class. Together with my cooperating teacher Ma'am Rosie. But I will only have observations in 7th grade science subjects. Because this week is still included in the first quarter, and the science subject is in grade 7.

Since Ma'am Rosie's teaching hours for grade 7 start from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., I took the time to wander around the school. In this school there are students ranging from grades 7 - 12. I passed through the corridors of 9th grade, 7th grade, 8th grade, and 11th and 12th grade high school corridors.

This school has a large enough field for sports activities. Many students seemed curious about our presence. Some of them also asked to take pictures together. I am happy that the students in this school are all friendly. They did not hesitate to say hello and say good morning. After getting tired of going around, Nia and I followed Ma'am Rosie to teach 11th grade. Although it is not a class I will be observing, I consider this to be another experience for me. We had time to introduce ourselves in front of the 11th grade students. That day was their summative exam schedule, so 1 hour was specifically used for the exam.

At 10 o'clock, we followed Ma’am Rosie to the 7th grade sunflower. Today the material taught is about mixture and substance. Based on the results of observations and interviews, students do not have subject books. Since COVID-19, they have been equipped with self-modules. Self module itself is a module that each discusses one topic. However, due to signal limitations in that area, some teachers admitted that it was difficult to conduct online learning (during COVID-19).

Based on interviews and observations with cooperating teachers, the methods that are usually done are deductive (general to specific) and inductive (specific to general) methods. Due to limited equipment, there is rarely any laboratory activity. But Ma'am Rosie still held demonstrations in front of the class so that students could understand. In addition, he also uses PPT and projectors in front of the class as learning media.

Introducing me in front of the class
|
In this school in grade 7 there are 4 classes, namely Sampaguita, Sunflower, Orchid and Lily classes. Each class contains 50 - 60 students. The Sampaguita class is said to be a superior class compared to others. Even so, the big difference I feel is that students here are more active and dare to express opinions compared to students in Indonesia. Although their answers were not fully correct, they still dared to convey them in front of the class. In these 3 I spent making observations in all these classes. I am very happy because I can meet and get to know my students here.
